Spirits, Seances, and a Ringing Watch: Spiritualism and the papers of Joseph Peace Hazard

Spirits, Seances, and a Ringing Watch: Spiritualism and the papers of Joseph Peace Hazard In-Person

Dive into the world of 19th century Spiritualism through the papers of Joseph Peace Hazard, a Rhode Island Spiritualist and self-described clairvoyant who could see, hear, and sense ghosts. Hazard attended seances, worked with mediums, and kept a detailed record of his watch “ringing,” which he believed to be a form of communication from his “Spirit Friends.”

Patricia McIvor will share stories from Hazard’s papers and explain how the documents have been digitized in an online exhibit through the Special Collections Department of Adams Library.
